Guest post by: Lindsey Harper Mac

Although the Kindle is primarily used as an electronic reading device, its benefits go far beyond the advantage of carrying multiple reading materials in a conveniently lightweight unit.

Whether you own a Kindle or are still debating whether or not you should invest in one, it’s good to know what life-enriching features you could be taking advantage of in between chapters. The following list compiles the top five most beneficial, yet little known features of the Kindle.

1. Internet Access

Very few modern electronic devices come without the basic feature of Internet access, and the Kindle is no different. For those moments where you come across a fact you’d like to research in detail or take a quick break to check your email, the Kindle’s web access feature offers a convenient outlet for doing so without having to switch to another device. With this feature, you can still escape within your story without going too far off the grid.

2. Alternative Reading Materials

Everyone knows you can use the Kindle to check out the latest novels, biographies, and other works of non-fiction, but a lesser known fact is that the device can also access several magazines, newspapers and even popular blogs for your short-term reading enjoyment. This feature comes at a small monthly fee that varies according to each selection. Kindle users can choose from popular selections such as “The New York Times,” “The Wall Street Journal,” “Time Magazine” and “The New Yorker.” A wide variety of popular blogs can also be downloaded directly from the Internet.

3. Social Networking

When you come across a line or passage that creates a profound impression, you likely want to share it with your friends. With the social networking capabilities of the Kindle, you can easily select the portion of the text you would like to share and post it to Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, and various other social networking websites on the web. This feature makes reading more of a social experience that will likely provoke interesting discussions on the subject.

4. Games

Need to take a break from heavy reading materials? The Kindle gives you the opportunity to blow off some steam and have a little fun with a collection of games that exercise your brain, without making you work too hard. Because of the limitations on the Kindle’s graphics, these games typically include basics like word games, card games, puzzles, and popular board games. Some examples of games included in this list are solitaire, Sudoku, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, poker, and Minesweeper. Most of these games come free with the device, while others require a small fee.

5. Text-Searching Abilities

Unlike paper reading materials, the Kindle lets you search for a specific word, line or other component of the text without having to skim through several pages. Simply use the search bar feature embedded in the device and discover exactly what you were looking for in seconds. This feature not only saves time, but also helps you more effectively analyze the text for a more enriching reading experience.

When it comes to using your Kindle, sometimes you have to think outside the tablet. For those who have yet to take full advantages of the features listed, it should be noted that incorporating these features into your reading can help enhance your understanding and enjoyment of the text overall.

Guest post by: Greg Buckskin I like free apps as much as anyone, but I’ve definitely got my money’s worth from the $2.99 ComiCat app. (honestly, I got it for $0.99 during a special sale) I’ve used desktops and notebook … Continue reading →

Guest post by: Greg Buckskin

I like free apps as much as anyone, but I’ve definitely got my money’s worth from the $2.99 ComiCat app. (honestly, I got it for $0.99 during a special sale) I’ve used desktops and notebook PCs to feed my comic addiction in the digital age, but the hands-on interface of smartphones became my medium of choice.

My huge collection of scanned comics is immediately available wherever I go, while valuable originals stay at home, safely archived in their protective sleeves (yes, I’m That Guy). Still, it’s always a hassle reading on my 3.5″ iPhone screen or even the extra half-inch of my Droid 3.

The 7″ Kindle Fire eliminated all of the frustrating zooming and panning, bringing back beautiful full-page views. Amazon’s app store provides several dedicated comic apps, but although ComiXology shows amazing promise for digital comics, the lack of support for .cbr and .cbz files was a major deal-breaker for me. Likewise, compared to the similar Perfect Viewer (which I regularly use on my phone), ComiCat simply looks better, and syncs / loads files more quickly. The interface for reading and organizing comics is flexible and intuitive, with a (skinnable) bookshelf view and various reading options such as landscape switching to show either a detailed half-page zoom or the full two-page spread (ideal for those breathtaking ‘centerfold’ panels). On top of everything else, the developer (the inaccurately named Mean Labs) offers exemplary customer support.

If you’re a comic collector / lover, then you won’t be disappointed with ComicCat for the Kindle Fire.

Bio: Greg Buckskin is an avid comic collector, science fiction geek, and technology freak. He writes for CableTV.com.

Given the erotic nature of E.L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey, one of the more surprising facts about it, is that it has a significantly large male audience.

The romantic and sexual content seemed to render the book ideal for capturing a certain female demographic, but it has generated nearly as much masculine appreciation. Moreover, the book has crossed over seemingly insurmountable audience barriers: young, old, professional, blue-collar, gay and straight men are openly admitting to loving the book.

In an odd way, this fact serves to reinforce James’s parallels with another best-selling author: J. K. Rowling. Rowling’s Harry Potter novel accomplished the same feat, cutting across major age and cultural bridges to capture a global audience. Then, there are the more pragmatic factors relating the two authors themselves. Both choose to publish under names with twin initials. Both are middle-aged women of the UK, and both are mothers. More importantly, both Rowling and E L James have achieved a status rare in the publishing world, and particularly in a publishing world only a shadow of its former glories; they have had success both fast and at virtually unparalleled levels, and James has already earned a slot as one of Time magazine’s hundred most influential people in the world.

James and Rowling part company, however, in one interesting, and even more modern way. As Fifty Shades of Grey was initially printed by a small press in Australia, copies were few and, when the demand began to grow, this rarity fueled that demand. It was quickly answered by e-reader formatting, and this technology is largely responsible for James’s novel holding high ranks on the New York Times Bestseller List and Amazon.com. Additionally, the e-reader version allows for a measure of privacy a hardcover or paperback does not. More exactly, readers perhaps not wishing to be seen devouring what has been called “mommy porn” and the “grown-up Twilight” are free to enjoy with their reputations intact.

This is a guest post by Tricia Meyer.

With all of the recent media attention on Fifty Shades of Grey, it seems that most people are buying it just because everyone else is. Face it, you don’t want to be the only one who isn’t reading one of the most popular books so far in 2012. You could also buy it for the “romance” – but romance books are really a dime a dozen. So why should you really buy it?

1 – Give Your Libido a Wake up Call

If you’re like many women, you’re so busy between work, home and family that you don’t really take the time to consider your sex life. The longer that you’re in a relationship, the more likely it is that you need to take time to actually think about what it is that you enjoy about sex and how you need to make it a priority in your relationship. If Fifty Shades doesn’t get you there, not much will.

2 – Open Up Dialog With Friends

One of the most surprising things that I found about this book was that it opened the floodgates of sexual conversations that I was having with friends. We had never been prudish in our talks before, but now we were getting specific. By talking about the book, we started talking about ourselves. That sharing led to new ideas for me and my husband.

3 – Speak Up to Your Partner

Fifty Shades explores a lot of toys, positions and ideas that most of us do not routinely talk about with our partners. Reading the book gives you the perfect opportunity to open up with your partner about things that you have either wanted to try or maybe have never even heard of. If you are too embarrassed to talk about it, just flag the page in the book and hand it to your partner. I’m sure that he/she will get the hint.

4 – Try Something New (or a Few Somethings)

By the time you have read the Fifty Shades books, talked to your girlfriends and opened up to your partner – you will be ready to try at least something new. Whether it’s a direct result of something you read in the book or something that comes out of those other discussions, you will be itching to either: get online and do some research, place some online toy orders or just grab your partner and improvise. Or maybe a little of each.

This is a guest post by: Ilya Elbert

Do you have the new tablet from Amazon? Yes I’m talking about the Kindle Fire tablet created and launched by Amazon at the very affordable price tag of just $199. This tablet gained a huge following shortly after its debut and the reason behind this would be the brand recognition of the tremendously successful Kindle e-reader.

The Kindle Fire tablet with its Amazon identity could be considered as a secure and mufti-facilitated device, but it’s actually a consumer gadget and a platform for distributing and promoting Amazon content.

Well, if you’re using this amazing tablet, you would definitely be using the features like social networks, email access and accessing your bank accounts. Let me tell you that you need to lock down your Kindle Fire tablet if you’re using these features. Keep on reading to know about some good tips to secure it.

Make it password secure

Make all your IDs password protected. If ever your Kindle Fire tablet gets stoles, the thief may definitely try to open and access your accounts. It may create you a big trouble, even bigger than stealing your tablet. Do not forget to make all your email accounts and social networking IDs password protected. You can save your personal information with the passwords.

To make your accounts password protect you need to go to the settings tab. Click the gear icon on the upper right corner to get into the settings. Click on the button ‘More’ and you see the tab of ‘Security’ there. Next go to ‘Lock Screen Password’ and turn it on. Enter any password that is hard to guess. Make sure you remember your own passwords. Enter confirm and you are done.

Lock your WI-Fi

You can also lock the web access by locking Wi-Fi. You can set a personal password for that. Doing this may help you keeping other away from your tablet computer. No one else would be able to access the web on your tablet. If you have growing children at our home, you should get it done to keep them away from accessing web on your tablet.

How to lock Wi-Fi

Go to the settings Click on Restrictions and ‘Enable Restrictions’ assign any password you want to enter the password again. Just a few steps and your Wi-Fi is locked. You would need to enter the password every time you want to access your internet.

Restrict Applications

Kindle Fire tablet is set to only to the apps coming from the Amazon Apps Store. To allow more apps you need to change the settings.

To change the settings, go to ‘Device Settings’ and click on “Allow Installation of Applications” from unknown resources. Make sure that you download and install the trusted applications from trusted sources. I would rather advice to keep this option disabled and use only the Amazon supported apps.

Clean Up the Browser

To clean up the browser of your Kindle Fire Tablet first go to the menu icon to the bottom of screen and then go to ‘Settings’. You can do any settings in your browser from this tab. You can clear the cache, cookies and the browsing history from this tab. You can clear out all the saved passwords and the stored data through this tab.

Kindle Fire Tablet has access to very personal web browsing like net banking, mobile banking, Twitter, Facebook, email and many other apps which include your personal information. Thus it becomes very important to keep it secured. Make sure you follow the above mentioned tips and make your Kindle Fire Tablet a most secured device.

In what can only be described as an ass backwards move, Barnes N Noble has (or is planning to introduce) a pair of BOSE made headphones for the Nook.

The headphones are only set to cost about $50 which for BOSE branding and quality is actually pretty low, and considering the ridiKulous amount that some newer hip headphones are going for these days, this is a bottom of the barrel price.

The BOSE headphones for the Nook themselves do not look too shabby, but we just have to wonder why would Barnes N Noble create such a product. We don’t foresee a need for this – at all.
